Healthy banana bread recipe
My kids like eating bananas but sometimes I think they intentionally leave bananas sit on the counter with the hopes I will make banana bread. I have my go-to banana bread recipe, but I have been wanting to try a healthy banana bread recipe.
Now, I wasn’t planning on making a sugar-free, calorie-free banana bread, I mean it is still bread after all. However, I just wanted a healthier option with maybe a little less fat and calories.
This recipe ended up super moist and super tasty. My 8 kids devoured it literally in minutes!
If all of my kiddos declared this a winner, you know it really is good. 🙂
Finally a healthy banana bread with applesauce that tastes great!
This recipe is so delicious that no one will ever guess that it is healthy too. Give it a try and see if your kids love it as much as mine do!
Ingredients you need:
- granulated sugar
- butter or margarine
- ripe bananas
- sour cream
- egg whites
- baking soda
As you can see, this recipe is lightly different than my other recipe, but you are not missing out on the sugar. You could easily swap out the sugar too with something else to make it even healthier, but I think my husband would have cried if I got rid of the sugar completely. 🙂
How to make this simple healthy banana bread recipe?
First, preheat the oven.
Next, combine the sugar and softened butter and beat with mixer.
Now it is time to add the bananas, milk, sour cream and egg whites. Beat well.
Healthy substitution ideas:
- Try almond milk for a dairy free option.
- Make flax eggs to use instead of regular eggs.
- Add dark chocolate chips or peanut butter morsels for a special treat.
- Use coconut oil instead of the butter.
- Substitute almond flour for the regular flour.
- White whole wheat flour is another good substitute.

How to freeze banana bread:
This recipe freezes great. You can make a lot all at once and then freeze them.
Just wrap it in cling wrap and place in a freezer bag. Allow it to thaw on the counter until you are ready to serve. Your family will never know it came out of the freezer.

How do I get bananas to ripen?
If you have bananas that are too green, there are a few things you can do to help them ripen faster. Place them in a brown paper bag and this will help the banana to get ripe.
If you want to speed it up even more, place an apple in the bag with them. This will further speed up the process.
This is a simple trick that works great. Give it a try!
